What is considered a SCAM?
Show all FAQs - General

Labeling a business opportunity as a SCAM is not easy to do.  GoMatador.com classifies these types of businesses as scams;

- any "opportunity" that costs money and is NOT based on a product and/or a service.

- any website or email that collects your personal information without telling you what it will be used for.

- any offer made that, without explanation, may harm one party to the benefit of the recruiting party.

Many fantastic, legitimate businesses can be misrepresented by one, or by a few unscrupulous agents.  Especially businesses that pay straight commission, or recruit independent representatives.  Here are some more items that may or may not indicate a scam, but are definitely red flags that we use to research an opportunity further;

- lead generating websites that capture personal information (usually name, phone, and email) BEFORE stating clearly what the product or service is.  These are VERY common and usually are an indication that if the general public had the knowledge of what the business truly was, they would not be interested.  Links to lead generation sites are not allowed on GoMatador.com.

- ads that make wild claims of massive profits.  Even if there is a disclaimer of "results not typical" hidden in the fine print, it is marginablly ethical to make said claims.  A better approach would be to profile those who ARE making those large amounts.  Massive money takes hard work no matter what business you are in, and this fact should be represented.

- businesses that are difficult to figure out the difference between the business name, the product, the service, the main ingredient, the marketing terms, their slogan and/or their corporate name, as well as businesses that have changed names repeatedly.  Major red flags.  Once again, a successful product/service that can live up to its claims will be proud of its name and will not be deceptive in its marketing.

GoMatador.com believes that there are thousands of great work-from-home opportunities out there today, and they should be represented ethically and responsibly.  And although we cannot guarantee the accuracy of the claims made on our site, or endorse the companies or reps making these claims, we WILL always try to research each and every profile or advertisers on GoMatador.com to make sure we always stay your most trusted source for legitimate home-based opportunities.

More about home based franchises
Show all FAQs - General

To better describe what a home based franchise is, first we must be familiar with what differentiates a franchise from other forms of businesses.  The foundational value of a franchise is typically its name, the trademarks associated with the name, the benefit to the Franchisee of the marketing dollars spent by the Franchisor to build recognition of the brand, and tried-and-true systems and procedures that have been proven to work in various markets.  A franchise allows an entrepreneur to avoid "reinventing the wheel" by utilizing the Franchisor’s proven tactics to launch into business ownership.  For instance, McDonald’s fast food restaurants are a franchise business model.  The Franchisor (the corporate headquarters) provides all the advertising and marketing, the packaging, the vendor relationships, tFranchise from homehe business plan, the training, etc.  The Franchisee purchases the franchise territory, and makes royalty payments to the Franchisor.

A Franchisee agrees to pay a fee to the Franchisor in exchange for permission to operate a business or sell a product or service using the established business name and systems.  The Franchisee is usually granted an exclusive territory in which he or she is the only distributor of the particular goods or services in that area. The Franchisor is usually obligated by contract to assist the Franchisee through advertising, promotion, research and development, quantity purchasing, training, education, and/or other specialized management resources.

Additionally, certain laws, known as Franchise Disclosure laws, are in place to protect the Franchisee/Franchisor relationship, requiring the Franchisor to disclose certain facts such as the true cost of operating the Franchise, the background of the company and all fees involved.  Although franchise deals can be different, they usually require up-front franchise fees, and/or monthly or quarterly royalties paid to the Franchisor.

Work-from-home franchises are simply businesses that have utilized the franchise business model for home-based or home-office business.  Independent entrepreneurs can purchase and operate a franchise out of their homes, reducing many of the higher costs of operation such as commercial lease expenses and the cost of employees.

GoMatador.com has many listings for work from home franchises.  Home-based franchises are an excellent way to start entrepreneurship with an arsenal of information and support, and they are often more affordable than you may think.  We recommend you explore them carefully and thoroughly to ensure you make the best choice for your goals.

How do I know the listed businesses are legitimate?

Seal of Approval, legitimate opportunities
We at GoMatador.com know how hard it is to find information on legitimate home-based opportunities on the web.  In fact, that is why we are here.  Go to your favorite search engine and search for “home based business”.  Most of the results are scams, get-rich-quick schemes or biased informational sites trying to steer you to their specific offer.  So how do you know that the opportunities here on GoMatador are legit?  In order to be an advertiser or have a profile on our site, a business must meet our strict criteria.

For example, many companies listed here are registered with a researchable organization such as the DSA (Direct Selling Association) or the IFA (International Franchise Association). They are required to offer a legitimate product or service, and not base potential earnings on recruitment of “downlines”.  Profiles of independent reps working with Network Marketing (MLM) companies are frequently reviewed by our team and warned or removed if their profiles contain language that we feel is misleading or misrepresenting.

We only accept Affiliate Marketing companies that make reasonable claims of earnings, offer comprehensive support, tools and/or training, and have longevity in the market.  In other words, they have proven their system through time and have shown a success rate we can stand behind.

Individuals and businesses represented here pay a fee to get their details in front of you.  We have found that this fee helps to weed out any bad apples, leaving the hard working, valid companies and reps who understand that paying for this kind of advertising and representing with integrity gains them the ability to have their companies reviewed by the kind of prospects they are truly looking for.

Additionally, we allow our site to "self police" by using our Report Prohibited Behavior link.  Any user who feels that someone's claims are not legitimate, or feels that a profile or advertiser is in violation of our Terms of Use may use this link to report the accusation.  All claims will be fully investigated and appropriate action, including but not limited to removal and banning from the site, will be taken.

Bottom line, there are A LOT of great work-from-home opportunities available, and GoMatador.com works hard to keep our site a safe, legitimate and fruitful forum for businesses to network and find new reps, franchisees and staff.  As with ANY entrepreneurial venture, there are risks involved, and not every business that opens is able to stay open.  We have eliminated the obvious risks by making it a priority to keep scams off our site. The success of any of our featured ventures is entirely up to you!
